Don’t Miss Your Life Waiting for it to Begin…

There’s a trap in being a ‘goal getter.’

If you’re the kind of person who loves the fresh start feeling of a brand new year, you’re probably also a person who loves creating new goals. Maybe you buy a new journal and fancy pen. You get all of the supplies to create a new vision board. You spend the weekend before the first of the year deciding new goals, planning next steps, and creating visual cues to remind yourself of where you’re going.

You ask yourself questions like: What’s the vision for my life? What are the goals that will create that vision? What new projects am I excited to pursue? How different will my life look once I achieve those goals?

And those are great questions to ask when the highlight reels of your life are all about crossing finish lines… But, there’s also a trap in being goal obsessed.

And the trap is this: When you spend your life’s energy creating and achieving goals, you spend your entire life waiting for the next chapter to start… and missing the beautiful page you’re on.

And there will be a lot of people who say “I’m driven. I’m an overachiever. I’m happiest when I’m achieving and accomplishing my goals.” That’s valid.

But, how much of your life will be spent at the finish line? How many seconds does basking in the actual goal achieve last? And how’s the quality of the remaining 98% of your life if what you love most is the result… and not the process?

And here’s something I want you to consider in this brand new year:

On a daily basis, savor the experience of getting to your goals.

Meaning… Yes, have goals but don’t dismiss the ordinary (and extraordinary) in today because you’re way too focused on getting to a different tomorrow.

Say to yourself “If I knew today was my last day, how would I live it? How would I enjoy it? How would I relax into it?” And then do that.

At the end of the day, we’re human BEINGS, not human DOINGS… and, while there’s nothing wrong with being ambitious and driven, there is something VERY wrong with wasting the life you have today wishing you were already in the life you want to create tomorrow.
